As an academic advisor with the Groups Scholars Program, Maqube Reese sees firsthand the ways that scholarships have a remarkable impact on students from historically underserved communities. Each year, Reese consults with incoming Groups Scholars on topics like the courses they should take their first semester, helping guide the first steps of their college experience. Throughout these conversations, she said, she has seen the burgeoning student success that philanthropy supports, which has convinced her of the importance of giving back to the OVPDEI programs that make this success possible.
“No matter how big or small my gift is, I believe philanthropic donations go far, especially in OVPDEI programs,” Reese said.
For Reese, giving back to IU is more than an extension of her professional work with the Groups Scholars Program. It is also a key way for her to support an institution and a community that has profoundly shaped her friendships, her education, and her personal development.
“It is important to give back to IU because I have learned a lot while here. I value the community I have built and the amazing friendships that I hold so close,” Reese said.
